Introduction to Cameroon Keyboards

Welcome to the home of the Cameroon Keyboard on the Internet. This page will direct you to the resources needed to type in the vernacular and national languages of Cameroon. The Ethnologue¹ lists 279 living languages in Cameroon, and 275 of these are indigenous. For a list of these languages, view Cameroon in the Ethnologue.

The Cameroon Keyboard, a set of virtual keyboards maintained by the Language Technology team of SIL Cameroon, allows you to type any of these languages that follow the General Alphabet of Cameroonian Languages.

Prerequisites

Before choosing a virtual keyboard, you need to know several things:

1. The physical keyboard of your computer.
2. Which languages do you want to type?
3. Your Operating System (Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, iOS)

Virtual Keyboard Recommendations for Cameroon

Installing a virtual keyboard allows you to type languages that your computer was not designed to use. When choosing virtual keyboards, it is MUCH easier to learn the keyboard if the keys are in the same place as the letters you want to type. Before moving on, you should find out what type of physical keyboard you have on your computer.

Computers bought in different countries tend to have different physical keyboard layouts. Most computers in Cameroon have either a US English (QWERTY) Keyboard or a French (AZERTY) Keyboard. Other common variants in Cameroon are the German and Swiss keyboards. Below, you will find some recommendations of virtual keyboards based on your physical keyboard.

Recommendations pour des claviers virtuels au Cameroun

L’installation d’un clavier virtuel vous donnera l’opportunité de saisir du texte dans une langue nouvelle. En choisissant le bon clavier virtuel, vous pouvez faciliter l’apprentissage et l’utilisation du clavier. Avant de continuer, il faut savoir la disposition physique de votre clavier.

Les ordinateurs achetés dans des pays divers auront des dispositions physiques différentes.
